What is AFFF Firefighting Foam?
Firefighting Foam, also known as Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), is a highly toxic substance used to extinguish fires and is commonly used by airports, military, and civilian firefighters (commonly in training exercises).
What is the Problem With AFFF Firefighting Foam?
AFFF Foam contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”) which are known to be extremely dangerous to human health and are readily absorbed after consumption or inhalation. PFAS are known as the “forever chemical” due to their unique chemical composition which prevents them from biodegrading in the environment or oxidizing through the human body. As a result, PFAS accumulates in the bloodstream, kidney, and/or liver, and can stay in the human body for long periods of time.
PFAS can also remain in the environment for many years and can move through the soil and into groundwater, or be carried in the air and inhaled
Due to its extreme persistence in the environment, along with its toxicity, mobility, and bioaccumulation potential, PFAS poses severe adverse effects to human health and the environment, which can manifest months or years after exposure.
What Health Problems are Linked to Firefighting Foam/PFAS Exposure?
AFFF Foam contains PFAS and multiple cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens) that are linked to a number of cancers and other medical conditions, such as:
- Testicular Cancer
- Kidney/ Renal Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Birth Defects
- Pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy)
- Decreases in infant birth weight
- Liver Issues
- High Cholesterol
- Liver Problems
PFAS has also been linked to serious environmental pollution that is extremely difficult to clean up.
Who is Most at Risk?
- Firefighters
- Military Personnel
- Refinery and chemical plant workers
- AFFF Manufacturers
- People exposed to contaminated air or groundwater
Who Can File a Lawsuit?
Anyone who was exposed to AFFF and suffered adverse health problems may be eligible to file an AFFF lawsuit. People who work directly with AFFF – such as firefighters (civilian and military), military personnel, airport workers, refinery chemical plant workers, and oil rig workers – have the greatest risk for long-term exposure to PFAS.
